History

On July 22nd, 1994 at the Therapeutic Recreation Symposium for the Southwest, 5th Season's Hotel in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, therapeutic recreation specialists from Oklahoma met. The agenda dealt with the need to organize and become a networking force. Options for organizing were discussed in relationship to being committed to ORPS (Oklahoma Recreation and Park Society) and the TR Branch, becoming an affiliate of ATRA (American Therapeutic Recreation Association) or forming our own state organization. Twenty-four individuals signed up to become involved in a chapter affiliate with a commitment to meet in Stillwater on August 18th to discuss Bylaws and organizational issues.

August 18, 1994: Sixty-five professionals met at the OSU Wellness Auditorium in Stillwater. The meeting was called to order by Dr. Jerry Jordan, CTRS at 7:00 p.m. Dr. Suzie Lane and Dr. Jordan presented the following agenda:

  1. Name of organization
  2. Executive Director – Housing
  3. Structure of organization
  4. Fees for organization
  5. Term of office
  6. Voting of officers

The name of the organization was approved as the Therapeutic Recreation Association of Oklahoma (TRAO). Dr. Jerry Jordan was approved as Executive Director with OSU Leisure Studies as the initial location of the organization office. Membership structure was approved as the follows:

Professional members -CTRS in good standing with NCTRC Associate Professional Student members **Only professional members can hold office, yet all others can work on committees and all have voting privileges. One year term of office for officers. Fee Structure: Professional $30, Associate $30, Students $10 December 1994, TRAO was incorporated as a 501 (c) (6) Not For Profit Corporation with the State of Oklahoma. Incorporators of the Therapeutic Recreation Association of Oklahoma included: Dr. Suzie Lane; Cheri Rice; Lori Hamlin; Marti Jourden; Tanna Germundsen; Vickie Holler; David Welch; and, Dr. Jerry Jordan
